The rubber tree or shiringa, is a tree of the euphorbiaceae family, 20 to 30 m high (exceptionally 45 m). The trunk is straight and cylindrical, 30 to 60 cm in diameter, white and light wood.
Originally from the Amazon River basin, where it existed in abundance and exclusivity, characteristics that generated the boom or rubber fever, a period of South American history of great wealth and strength for entrepreneurs who settled in the Amazon region and at the same time a disaster for the indigenous population who suffered extermination and slavery. By 1914 the amount of rubber obtained from plantations already exceeded that extracted from wild trees.
The shiringa suffers the typical dangers of the Amazon. The forests live under the threat of logging, which gives way to fields suitable for agriculture and cattle raising, and climate change unpredictably modifies the seasons, complicating the extraction stages.
