Description

Leche Caspi belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is an Amazonian tree originating in Central and South America. Its habitat ranges from Central America to the Amazonian regions of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. In the Peruvian Amazon River it is used for its sap; it grows in the regions of Loreto, San Martín, Ucayali, Madre de Dios, Huánuco and Pasco. It is medium to large in size, with latex. The leaves are verticillate, broad elliptic in shape, 6-35 cm long and 4-18 cm wide. The inflorescence is a panicle with pink flowers. The fruits are spherical, up to 3 cm in diameter, with pulp and 1 seed.

Use

The white, sticky latex from the tree is eaten to treat diarrhoea. The latex is also used to waterproof canoes and to make plastics and rubber. The fruit of the tree is edible and has a sweet, milky taste that attracts monkeys.
